In the bleachers at Chicago’s Wrigley Field, die hard Cub fans root for their team. The group includes a rabid cheerleader, a blind man who follows the game by transistor radio, a bathing beauty, a nerd, and various other bleacher denizens. As the game proceeds, they bet among themselves on every conceivable event, go out for frosty malts or beers, try to pick up the bathing beauty and, occasionally, watch the game.

Oil Lamp Theater in Glenview, IL is proud to present Bleacher Bums, a play written collaboratively by Chicago’s own Organic Theater Company, led by Joe Mantegna.  The play will premier on August 6th and run through September 20th.

Bleacher Bums, a nine-inning comedy, tells the story of a group of Chicago Cubs fans lounging on the bleachers during a hot summer afternoon.  There’s Melody, played by Katie Mancuso, a beautiful young sunbather; Greg, portrayed by Martin J. Hughes, whose gentle soul sees what his blind eyes cannot; Zig, a loudmouthed middle-aged man, who will be played by Rob Weinstein; Zig’s wife Rose, portrayed by Beth Goldberg, who secretly nurses a massive fanaticism for the Cubs; Decker, played by Eric Loughlin, a business man with a thirst for success; Richie, who will be played by JT Nagle, is a young man whose personal hygiene leaves something to be desired; Marvin, portrayed by Dennis Schnell, who has a gambling problem; and a young cheerleader, portrayed by Emily Hawkins, whose teenage energy is directed solely at the plucky baseball team.

The play follows this eclectic group as they do everything but watch the game. Originally written in a collaborative effort by the Organic Theater Company, Bleacher Bums shows the fascinating dynamics of a Cubs game, and perfectly captures the very human stories that make up a group of fans watching the game on a summer day.  These deeply compelling tales will make you laugh, cry, and maybe even root for the Cubs.

Keith Gerth, the Oil Lamp Theater’s founder and artistic director, will direct the production.
Performances of “Bleacher Bums” will run from August 6th through September 20th, on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays at 3pm. Oil Lamp Theater is a BYOB establishment. Tickets are $35 and are available through brownpapertickets.com or at the Oil Lamp box office Tuesdays through Fridays from Noon-5pm. Group rates are available.
